Jacques-Louis David was born on 30 August 1748, death on 29 December 1825, was a French painter in the Neoclassical style, considered to be the preeminent painter of the era. David won wide acclaim with his huge canvases on classical themes . When the French Revolution began in 1789, he served briefly as its artistic director and painted its leaders and martyrs (The Death of Marat) in a style that is more realistic than classical. Later he was appointed painter to Napoleon.
