Description: The Gleaners is an oil painting by Jean-Francois Millet completed in 1857. The Gleaners depicts a trio of women gleaning the last bits of wheat from a field. The painting is famous for featuring in a sympathetic way what were then the lowest ranks of rural society; this was received poorly by the French upper classes. The peasant subjects, which from the early 1850s were to be Millet’s principal concern.
